If you are in the market for a great DSLR camera, I would strongly suggest you buy Canon 60d. Why? In every way it is the best.
Audio levels can be controlled manually, which makes for far better audio recordings.
The image quality is a big reason you should buy Canon 60d. In my opinion the 60d is the best choice of a DSLR. It costs significantly less than the 7d or 5d, it has the same great quality as the 7d, and it is a lot tougher than the t2i.
The sensor size is huge, not full frame, but still the same size as regular 35 mm film. You get the same 35mm look of shallow depth of field which only a large sensor can give you, meaning it is not so easy to focus. Before this, such a cinematic look could only be achieved with adaptors.
I honestly can say the 60d looks better than cameras that cost ten times the price.
The other great thing is the flip out LCD monitor, which is the only DSLR that can be used on a Steadicam without investing a ton of money.
Just flip out the screen and let it fly. It works great on even the Nano Flycam, just make sure the LCD monitor is flipped out before you balance it. You want the Flycam to balance properly, which is the hardest thing to get right at first.
A feature length film is really not impossible to shoot on the 60d. It has never been easier to shot one, and I am shooting one right now. Camera set ups are quick and easy, sometimes faster than when shooting news.
This is how it goes: so I set up a wide shot. Pick up the light camera on the light sticks, get the medium shot, the two shot, pick it up again, and get the close up, naturally with slight light adjustments, but the point is I can do it all alone if I have to.
You will need a crew to do this with 35mm film. Shooting a feature with the 60d is almost like shooting news: it can be fast and spontaneous.
It is feather light, and I love it. Is the 7d and 5d too heavy? Yes and no. For me I prefer the 60d. I can take the 60d anywhere, and shot cinema quality images, in public places without drawing a lot of attention to myself, because I look like a tourist. In a lot of cases its greatest benefit is its size.
The controls are better than the t2i, more like the 7d. The controls are accessible, so going through menus, or changing the white-balance is easy.
I know a lot of pros in the business after working ENG for over twenty years, and all the newspaper shooter I know uses 60d, they love it. In my carrier I personally have not had a more inexpensive camera that has produced such awe inspiring images. You will love it, so buy Canon 60d too if you are serious about DSLRs.
